Tech Equity by Michael C. Fillios | Book Review

Short Synopsis:

Conceptually viewed as an asset, Tech Equity comprises key components of a company’s technology portfolio. SMBs that invest in building Tech Equity are better positioned to navigate crises, take advantage of opportunities, and outperform the competition. This not only translates to higher returns and a more appealing balance sheet, but yields greater talent retention, a heightened focus on the customer experience, and a better understanding of the company itself.

Fillios draws on more than 25 years of experience in business, finance, and IT leadership and includes multiple real-world case studies demonstrating Tech Equity in action, amidst the challenges of the pandemic, as companies compete for survival and search for new opportunities.

My Review:

In today’s digital age, technology plays an important role in various parts of a business. The author Michael C. Fillios, whose previous book was Tech Debt 2.0, lays emphasis on using technology as an empowerment tool to scale up small and medium business (SMBs) to a level of competitive advantage. During Covid 19 many businesses were destroyed, however, those with tech stacks i.e. using ERP, SaaS, Cloud Computing, RPA not only did better but also outperformed their competitors.

Tech Equity by Michael C. Fillios counts the fringe benefits that SMBs can reap from using the contemporary technologies. The author opines that SMBs can augment their customer base, business value, and foster data and cyber security using a proper tech management portfolio.

If you have read both books of the author, you will be able to comprehend that Tech Equity is the opposite of Tech Debt. The former increases the value of a business due to tech and IT usage, while the later decreases the value of business in absence of IT stacks. Nowadays without technology it is almost impossible to grow in any segment of the business.

Michael C. Fillios lends a proper coverage on Alphas and Betas of Tech Equity. Tech Equity is categorized into Alpha and Beta components. Alpha increases enterprise value. And Beta help in reducing risk and volatility…fosters security. Alpha includes Customer Focus, Data & Analytics, Digital Culture & Talent, Process Excellence and Security. Beta includes tech debt management, business agility, business model innovation, infrastructure optimization.

The book while referring all about tech equity also sheds light on tech debt, both concepts run through the pages with an equal gusto. From technology-in-business point of view, it is a resourceful book and it must be recommended. SMBs business mangers and leaders can learn a lot of new concepts. It is appreciable that the author adds a recap point at the end of each chapter to make sure that you understood the most important concepts that you will need to apply.
